### Previously…

Magic Number can solve equations like `5`*x* – 6 = 3*x* + 8

Behind the scene, it does a bit of elementary algebra:

`5`*x* – 6 = 3*x* + 8 → 5*x* – 3*x* = 6 + 8 → 2*x* = 14

…to get to a solvable form:

*a x = b*

#### However…

When you had something like `2 `*√** x * = 14

The story was rather sad.

### Now…

Our story has a happy ~~ending~~ beginning.

Magic Number can now handle:

*a f(x) = b*

(Provided *f* is invertible and a unique solution exists.)

We used the word ‘unique’ loosely.

√4 can be +2 or –2. Magic Number gives you +2 and consider it as unique.

The solver is limited to one solution. So no quadratic for now. Maybe in the future.

It’s also better at algebra.

### Solving compound interest problems

In version 2.1, we have an easy convention for compound interest, where

means ‘2000 with 10% compounded 3 times’
(see here).

If compounding happens once a year,

how long does it take to reach 3000?

If we want 3000 in 3 years. What rate should we go for?

Colon : is the key.

Colon as in hours:minutes:seconds.

The time format is quite liberal.

### Examples

(h = hours, m = minutes, s = seconds)

#### 2 h 15 m – 1 h 35 m 20 s

No need to enter the seconds for 2 h 15 m.

#### 5 m 25 s + 4 m 47 s

There are no hours. We can lazily ignore them.

#### 5 m 25 s + 47 s

We need ‘0:’ before ‘47’ to match up the units.
